Although Eliot's childhood remains veiled in mystery, I have seen the house where she was born, and there's a cheery garden plot on the south side of her home; perhaps it was tended by her. Autumn is delicious for a gardener: The weather increases productivity, and most efforts in this season will be beautifully restored to the laborer with the bright blooms of spring.

The Denver Botanic Gardens opens its cache today to Colorado gardeners. It's a Fall Plant and Bulb Sale to beat any other, with tried-and-true bulb varieties that have been tended by master gardeners. And those experts will be on hand — or should we say thumb? — to give advice for the autumn months. The sale, which takes place in the Morrison Horticultural Demonstration Center, opens at 8 a.m. for a members-only shopping hour (10 percent discount included), then to the public from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; admission is free.
